Aristocratic drama, a Harlem love story, and the perils of middle school are among the film topics taking center stage at the 28th annual IFP Gotham Awards.
The ceremony, one of the early stops on the awards season trail, is being held in New York City on Monday night. The Independent Filmmaker Project unveiled the 2018 nominees last month, and the contenders for Best Feature include Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, Paul Schrader’s First Reformed, Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, Josephine Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline, and Chloé Zhao’s The Rider.
First Reformed scored the most nominations coming into the Gotham Awards ceremony, with a total of three: Best Feature, Best Actor (for Ethan Hawke), and Best Screenplay. The Favourite received two nominations, for feature and screenplay, and will also receive a special Gotham Jury Award honoring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz for their ensemble performance in the film.
Other contenders at this year’s ceremony include Bo Burnham’s coming-of-age drama Eighth Grade, the horror film Hereditary, Adam Driver for his performance in BlacKkKlansman, Glenn Close for her role in The Wife, and the Mister Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
The Gotham Awards, which honor independent films, have been a reliable predictor of Oscar glory in recent years. Birdman, Spotlight, and Moonlight all won Best Feature and went on to claim Best Picture at the subsequent Academy Awards. Last year, however, Call Me By Your Name won the top prize at the Gotham Awards and went on to earn four Oscar nominations — but ultimately lost Best Picture to The Shape of Water.
See the full list of nominees below, which will be updated with winners throughout the ceremony.
