‘Armageddon’ was avoided at the World Chess Championship as Norway’s world number one Magnus Carlsen retained his title after 12 drawn games and more than 50 hours of tense play – eventually beating US opponent Fabiano Caruana in a tie-breaker.

The deadlock was broken when Carlsen won three time-limited games, Richard Conway went to watch the last day unfold in London.
