Tonight’s The Voice results round is a complete stunner. Seriously.
Amid some relatively pleasant team performances from Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson’s squads (singing “Rhiannon” and “I Will Always Love You” respectively), we learn that the people that have been sent through by voters for this round are:
- Reagan Strange (Team Adam)
- Kirk Jay (Team Blake)
- Kennedy Holmes (Team Jennifer)
- Chevel Shepherd (Team Kelly)
- Chris Kroeze (Team Blake)
- DeAndre Nico (Team Adam)
- Kymberli Joye (Team Kelly)
- MaKenzie Thomas (Team Jennifer)
- Dave Fenley (Team Blake)
- Sarah Grace (Team Kelly)
Everything checks out, except … wait, why is Tyke James in the bottom three? WYD AMERICA.
This show is called The Voice, and he’s definitely got one. His performance last night was exceptional! His song was one of the most-downloaded songs of the night! This makes no sense! And yet … here we are. Tyke has to sing for his supper alongside Sandyredd and Lynnea Moore, both of whom were foreseeable for this fate.
He’s as surprised as anyone, clearly, as he gives a half-winded Elvis Costello impersonation of a performance with the ill-advised selection, “I Wanna Go Home.” Carson Daly points out the irony of the title he’s chosen here (consider the line “My words were cold and flat/ And you deserve more than that” because that, too, is too true). Tyke did enough to earn an easy advancement past this point last night, but here after getting bad news, his lifeless performance won’t cut it to earn him the instant save.
Wow.
Adam’s right. This season just got less interesting with his departure.
Meanwhile, Sandyredd is also sent home after performing “Believer.” It’s not the first time we’ve heard an Imagine Dragons song this season — Kymberli Joye did “Radioactive” — but her’s is a pretty literal take on the song that guides us through all of her lower-than-the-limbo-line growl notes and the signature scream-singing she’s done with every performance before. It’s not bad, of course, but it’s also nothing new, so voters just don’t feel compelled to come out for her during either chance this week.
The one that does get rescued from elimination is Comeback Stage‘s Lynnea Moore, whose save-me performance features a lot of her pounding at the upper reaches of her register and not quite breaking through to that clean sound she needs. I’m … confused. Her song choice, “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys, is simply too ambitious for her, and it shows.
Of these three, Sandyredd is the most technically astute in the instant save performance, while Tyke James has had the more dynamic showing throughout the season. Lynnea Moore is still warming up to this new crowd, so why does she run away with the instant save vote?
The thing that might be a big feather in her cap tonight is how much of a stand-out she was during the Team Kelly group performance earlier in the night. In that, as she steered clear of the power notes and just kept some smooth, crisp control of her mid-range while letting the others do the heavy lifting. Otherwise? This decision is a big surprise.
Sigh. At least Dave, Kirk and Reagan are still in it.
