Singapore is a 279-square-mile island, which means open space is a precious rarity. To combat growing landfills, the country instituted a waste-to-energy system in the late 1970s. It generates energy by incinerating most of the country’s waste and then dumping the ash into a landfill. However, the question of how long this system will last as it faces new challenges still remains.
